How to Sit for a Reading

When visiting a psychic, many people are not sure what to do or how to act. So, keeping in mind that every psychic is different, here is my guide to help you prepare and sit for a psychic reading.

The first thing that you should consider is whether or not the psychic seems trustworthy. This is a hard thing to do before you commit to (and pay for) a reading, but there are ways to figure this out. I should say that I rarely get readings, but when I do I’m usually in Salem, Massachusetts and have time to walk around, looking at all the stores that offer readings and can make a decision of where I want to go based on the type of readings they offer and the vibe I get from the store. Nowadays of course, anyone can go online and find reviews, which helps too (please keep in mind though that every person is different and psychic readings are super personal, making reviews not always the easiest to go by). In some cases, a store will have a bio or some kind of blurb about the reader and what services they offer and that’s a good way to figure out if the reading is for you.

I want to give you an example of a time I chose NOT to get a reading because I didn’t trust the source. In my hometown, on a main road, there is now a psychic reader that advertises with a big hand sign outside the house. Knowing a friend was visiting me and wanted a reading, I called this place up to inquire about their readings and find out what they were charging. I left a message and didn’t hear back. Fine. So I drove us to this house and we knocked on the door and were invited into a living room that was clearly where this person lived. It was super awkward. His prices were extremely high, but he kept trying to bargain with us. He also left us alone for a little while so he could talk to his wife (still not sure which of them was the psychic - maybe both?). He also told us stories about his grandkids visiting, which was off topic and unprofessional. Neither one of us felt completely safe or comfortable, nor did we want to pay the exorbitant price for something that felt like a scam, so we left.

This example is extreme, but there are some important things to extrapolate: 1) we didn’t feel safe or comfortable, 2) there was a lack of information, 3) the maybe-psychic was unprofessional. These are all red flags. Just keep in mind that you have intuition and you should use it when determining if a reading is going to work for you. If you have any doubts about a person or a place, find another.

Now, you’ve paid for a reading and you find yourself sitting across from a psychic. It may be too late to turn back, but if you start getting bad vibes at this point, or if you feel somehow that this person isn’t right for you, if you speak up right away, a reputable psychic may give you a refund (BEFORE the reading starts). If this is not the case and you find yourself stuck with someone you’re not sure about, just try to relax and go with the flow and come at the reading from a place of having fun and nothing more - let go of your expectations. Hopefully, once you’ve sat down for a reading this won’t be the case.

Your reading has begun, what do you do now? All psychics are different, so pay attention to what your reader is saying to you. If they ask questions, answer them. If they tell you not to tell them anything, then don’t. Just try to relax and respond appropriately. Make sure that you open yourself up to the psychic so that they can read you (and your vibes, etc.) correctly. One thing I do want to mention here is that unless you are specifically told not to tell the psychic anything, you should be prepared to talk. For example, if you say that you want a reading about your career, but you’re not willing to give any information other than the odd word here and there, your reader isn’t going to be able to give you the best interpretation of the cards. We all do this. I know that I have definitely gone into a reading determined not to give any information out that the psychic can’t find for themselves. But if you want a good reading, you have to not test the psychic’s abilities and give them something to work with. Using the career example, you might want to say something more along the lines of, “I’m happy at my job, but it doesn’t feel right anymore and I’m starting to wonder if I should unofficially start looking elsewhere.” You’re not giving out any personal information, but now the psychic knows what kinds of messages to listen for and pay attention to during the reading. It can make a huge difference.

The other thing you need to understand about getting a reading is that you might not like what you hear. This shouldn’t cause you to shut down and close yourself off though. One, these readings, when done well, offer truths that you may not yet be aware of (or maybe you’re just not ready to admit those truths to yourself yet). Two, what you get from the reading might not be immediately obvious or immediate time-wise. You could get information that won’t apply to you for a year or more, or that might take something happening in your life to make sense. Don’t get angry with the psychic and don’t immediately write them off either. Sit with the information for at least a week before you pass judgment.

If, however, the reader is telling you something about yourself that you know to be untrue, please speak up. I once went to a psychic who specifically told me not to correct her unless she got something totally wrong. She said something about a recent break-up, which wasn’t true, but the feeling was right as I was going through a depression after losing my job. It felt like a break-up, but it wasn’t. I didn’t tell her about her mistake and the entire reading was off because it was based on a relationship/love break-up that never happened. So if something is wrong, tell your reader. Even if you’re testing your psychic to see if they’re any good, there’s nothing wrong with telling them that you didn’t recently go through a break up. If the reader is good, they will reinterpret the cards (each one has several meanings before you put them together in a spread) and get back on track. A bad reader will keep on making mistakes, you don’t need to test them.

What do you do if you’re getting a reading with me? Well, I am here to help you, so I hope that we can have a conversation. Please let me know if something doesn’t make sense, or if a certain card or tea leaf symbol means something to you other than what I am suggesting it means. The more I know about how you’re feeling and how certain things resonate with you, the more help, guidance, advice, and support I can offer. If you are just hoping for me to gaze into your future and make predictions then I am not the psychic reader for you and that’s okay.

I hope this guide helps you find a reader that you are comfortable with and that you would want to go back to again!
